I've been a patient with Dr. Quadri for many years. I wish I had found him sooner. He's very good at extractions and I think I would've had a better experience with my wisdom teeth removal here. I've switched my whole family to this office and many of my friends.

I went in for an emergency tooth extraction today and they were able to get me in fairly quickly. I couldn’t get to anybody for two days and I was in excruciating pain. Until I found this dentist. I’m terrified of needles and everybody who worked on me made sure to make me feel secure and safe. The dentist literally has a magic touch because I did not feel a needle at all. The extraction hurt mildly and it was so fast. They were decently priced. I think I will be coming to this dentist regularly. Thank you guys!

Full Mouth Extraction with Immediate Dentures: All the Details with Pros and Cons

Dentists often recommend full mouth extraction with immediate dentures to individuals suffering from severe tooth decay, gum disease, or other concerns.

In cases where the damage to the teeth is beyond repair, the patient’s teeth in both the upper and lower jaws are removed. The teeth extraction is followed by an immediate placement of a complete set of dentures called immediate dental dentures.

So, what exactly these immediate dental dentures are, and how do they help you after full mouth extraction? Keep reading to know!

What are Immediate Dental Dentures?

Immediate dentures are the ones that are inserted on the same day, right away, following the full extraction of teeth. These dentures serve as a temporary solution for two to three months until your permanent dentures are prepared.

Patients who opt not to undergo oral implants and wish to avoid any period without a prosthesis can use immediate dentures.

Moreover, immediate dentures protect your gum tissue during the healing process after tooth extraction.

What are the Pros and Cons of Getting Immediate Dentures?

Pros of Getting Immediate Dentures

  • Immediate dentures can be quickly inserted into your mouth right after the full extraction of teeth to fill the gaps.
  • They not only help in gum protection during the denture healing process but also in reducing gum bleeding.
  • One can receive immediate dentures on the same day as the extraction.

Cons of Getting Immediate Dentures

  • Immediate dentures are not custom-made for your mouth, so, less ideal fit compared to permanent dentures and have the potential for slipping or movement.
  • It may require periodic relining to add extra material to the denture to accommodate changes in the mouth during healing.
  • A feeling of soreness or irritation as your mouth adjusts to the dentures.
  • Neither they feel like natural teeth, nor are they as sharp as permanent dentures, which makes chewing a little harder for some people.
  • After tooth removal, your jawbone may shrink, requiring your dentist to modify or reposition your immediate dentures for your comfort.
  • They cannot be tried before tooth extraction.

Who is an Ideal Candidate for Immediate Dentures?

Let us be honest. You should only opt for immediate dentures if you are going for full teeth extraction. Your dentist will also not recommend immediate dentures if you have only one or a few missing teeth.

A dentist usually suggests immediate dentures with a full mouth extraction. Depending on your preferences, partial dentures or dental bridges can be a better alternative for a few missing teeth.

At the same time, it is essential to note that immediate dentures can trigger gag reflexes as they can move around quickly and touch the back of your mouth.

So, people with strong gag reflexes are not ideal candidates for getting immediate dentures. In such a case, waiting for your permanent dentures is better.

What is the Cost of Full Tooth Extraction with Immediate Dentures?

The cost of a full mouth extraction with immediate dentures can vary depending on several factors. These include the location of the dental office, the expertise and experience of the dentist, the specific procedure involved, and the type of material used.

For instance, premium dentures can cost $2,000 to $4,000 per plate, making a complete set range from $4,000 to $8,000. On the other hand, basic dentures can range from $600 to $1,000 per plate or $1,200 to $2,000 for a complete set.

If you are getting immediate dentures after full extraction of teeth, it will be an expensive procedure. However, these dentures can be a cost-effective solution in the long run as they can prevent other oral disorders requiring more comprehensive and costly procedures.

Discuss all the options available with your dentist during your initial appointment. You can also ask for before and after pictures of their work.

Furthermore, read online patient reviews. Ask friends and family for recommendations if they have got immediate dentures. Consider all the pros and cons of getting immediate dentures before deciding.

How Long Do Immediate Dentures Last?

Immediate dentures are temporarily placed in your mouth following the full teeth extraction to avoid teeth-less public appearances.

While immediate dentures can last as long as conventional ones, they are generally worn for 6-8 months until your permanent dentures are ready. Some individuals choose to wear immediate dentures long-term as a cost-saving measure.

However, it’s important to note that since these dentures are not custom-fitted to the mouth, they can slip and move, making them suitable for only a short period of use.

Nevertheless, you can keep them as a backup and use them if your permanent ones are damaged.

If you continue using immediate dentures, you should be prepared for regular alignments and adjustments to maintain a comfortable and proper fit.

Should You Get Immediate Dentures or Not?

The answer is pretty simple. Go for immediate dentures only if you are undergoing complete teeth extraction and want to avoid no teeth look until your permanent dentures arrive.

Furthermore, listen to your dentist carefully about their suggestions for your dental condition.

Ultimately, choose the option that best meets your needs. Please select the one that suits you, whether immediate dentures or dental bridges.
